be in England&#8221;\u2026<em>once when it was August!<\/em><br \/>\n(Alas, the Oxford Patristics Conference is not held in April\u2026and the current climate of darkest winter and cultural uncertainty do not call me thither \u201cnow that it is&#8221; January.\u00a0 No doubt Browning would understand.)<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter 2019 draws to a close and 2020 gets started, I turn my thoughts back to lovely summer days at Oxford, to the martyrs of the Tyburn Tree and to the university haunts of Saint John Henry Newman.<\/p>\n<p>Three of our American sisters came together in England this past August to participate in the International Patristics Conference held every four years in Oxford: <strong>Sr. Maria del Fiat Miola, SSVM<\/strong> (missionary in Italy), <strong>Sr. Maria Panagia Miola, SSVM<\/strong> (missionary in Italy), and myself, <strong>Sr. Maria Theot\u00f3kos Adams, SSVM<\/strong> (missionary in USA).<\/p>\n<p>In the over-grown late summer days we were able to extend the trip to include a few days in London with their parents (the tail-end of a family vacation\u2014yes, these two are \u201cblood sisters\u201d as well as sisters in religion).\u00a0 Then we all spent nearly a week together in a neighborhood flat in Oxford while each one &#8212; both parents are professors as well &#8212; saw to our respective research, meetings, and conference activities.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15132\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ssvmusa.org\/1s2s3v5m6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/SSVM_London_Miola_sisters_and_family.jpg?resize=800%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>London<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>First, we were blessed to stay with Benedictines nuns at their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tyburnconvent.org.uk\/site.php?id=225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyburn Convent<\/a> named in honor of the nearby place of the martyrs, the notorious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tyburnconvent.org.uk\/tyburn-tree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyburn Tree<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0This place of the \u2018King\u2019s Gallows\u2019 saw the death of 105 Catholic Martyrs killed for their faith between 1535 and 1681 during the period of the Reformation, as well as the execution of thousands of various criminals between 1196 to 1783.\u00a0 It is a stirring place of prayer, memory, and endurance of faith in our own highly secularized times.\u00a0 A pilgrimage spot of its own right!\u00a0 Take the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tyburnconvent.org.uk\/martyrs-shrine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on-line digital \u201ctour\u201d of the Martyrs\u2019 Shrine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15133\" 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During our days in London we especially sought out culture and the arts.\u00a0 We visited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgallery.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the National Gallery<\/a>, made it to one of the famous midday free concerts at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stmartin-in-the-fields.org\/about-our-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Saint Martin in the Fields<\/a> close-by, and were treated to live Shakespeare in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shakespearesglobe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the rebuilt open-air Globe Theatre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Oxford and Patristics<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once in Oxford, we had work to do, and work we did!\u00a0 Each one of us had come to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordpatristics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Conference on Patristic Studies<\/a> as both participant and presenter.\u00a0 Final polished version, edited handouts, and anticipated questions all filled our minds up to our own presentation hours.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15124\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ssvmusa.org\/1s2s3v5m6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/SSVM_Oxford_Conference_2019.jpg?resize=589%2C793&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" feature of the Conference was the sense of institutional collegiality among scholars &#8212; Sr. Fiat completed her PhD at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholic.edu\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Catholic University of America<\/a> in 2018, where I continue to work on mine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15125\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15125\" Oxford<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Every day on our way to the Conference sessions at Examination Hall on High Street we would walk past at least three major Newman sites: the Oratory, the \u201cMartyrs participated in the Holy Mass at the Oratory, the main Mass or a private Mass in one of the side chapels.\u00a0 In the back there was a small prie-dieu set up with candles and a replica of one of his most famous portraits as a shrine to Newman.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15128\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was a way of witnessing in real time the process of the cult of the saints\u2026a holy man was here.\u00a0 He died, but we remember him and his holiness.\u00a0 Now, we ask him to remember us \u2013 and light candles in front of his image to drive home the point.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15127\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ssvmusa.org\/1s2s3v5m6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/SSVM_Oxford_Oratory_2019.jpg?resize=503%2C721&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"503\" height=\"721\" also daily passed the \u201cMartyrs Memorial\u201d at the end of St Giles just before the Ashmolean Museum.\u00a0 The Gothic grounded spire (very much like the 13<sup>th<\/sup> century \u201cEleanor Crosses\u201d) was built in 1843 to renew the memories of the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century Anglican martyr-bishops known as the \u201cOxford Martyrs\u201d (Hugh Latimer, Nicholas Ridley and Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury). \u00a0These Reformation leaders were burned at the stake for heresy in 1555 and 1556 during the Catholic reign of Queen Mary Tudor.\u00a0 The delayed effort to honor them came about only in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> Century as a response to the perceived threat of Catholicism being advanced by the Tractarian Movement.\u00a0 The monument went up just two years before John Henry Newman came into the Catholic Church in 1845. \u00a0He stood out as one of the most high-profile converts of the age.\u00a0 (Perhaps we too may consider Gavin Ashenden the former chaplain to the royal family who was received into full communion with the Catholic Church just before Christmas 2019&#8230;and others treading the path from Canterbury to Rome.)<\/p>\n<p>Next, we would turn left onto High Street and pass the beautiful Church of Saint Mary the Virgin.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15129\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ssvmusa.org\/1s2s3v5m6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/SSVM_St_Mary_the_Virgin_Oxford.jpg?resize=424%2C752&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"424\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This church was the central chapel for generations of Oxford students.\u00a0 Located next to the old part of the Bodleian Library, it still bears a special closeness to students (and their bicycles).<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15141\" John Henry Newman from the time of his own student days to his long service as vicar (1828-1843) following his 1825 ordination to the Anglican priesthood.\u00a0 The column leading up to the raised pulpit bears a bronze marker in his honor placed there on the occasion of his beatification in 2011.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \/><\/p>\n<p>He preached <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmanreader.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">many beautiful homilies<\/a> from that spot, and prayed in the Mary Chapel of the apse during the years leading up to his entrance into full communion with the ancient Catholic Church.<\/p>\n<p>In Saint Peter\u2019s Square <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/pope\/news\/2019-10\/pope-canonization-mass-st-peters-newman.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this past October he was canonized<\/a>, named a saint of the Universal Church.\u00a0 Prince Charles not only attended the canonization, but also met privately with the Pope, and visited the Venerable English College where hundreds of English Catholic men went into exile to prepare for the priesthood\u2014and often for martyrdom, as well.\u00a0 (How times have changed!)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15137\" stands a brilliant mind and a gentle soul.\u00a0 This is the saint who goes far beyond the limits of Oxford, of Birmingham, even of Rome.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" Newman, intercede for us to grant us strength and endurance to make the journey to Truth, like the Magi of old who made great sacrifices to follow Truth and who lay down their treasures at His feet in
