\"Fra.Angelico.Beatutides\"<\/a>Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the liturgical season in which Catholics prepare for the triumph of Jesus\u2019 resurrection by uniting themselves more closely to Christ in His life, passion and death. The season of Lent lasts 40 days, symbolically representing the 40 days that Jesus fasted and was tempted in the desert prior to the beginning of His active ministry.<\/p>

In this effort to foster conversion in our hearts during this Lenten season, we find that the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1434) suggests the following activities:<\/p>

Spiritual exercises:\u00a0<\/strong>spiritual reading (Lectio Divina); making a retreat of the\u00a0Spiritual Exercises according to St. Ignatius of Loyola<\/a>; increasing prayer time \u2013\u00a0Via Crucis\u00a0<\/em><\/a>(Stations of the Cross),\u00a0the\u00a0Rosary<\/a>;\u00a0reflecting on Sunday Gospel readings<\/a>\u00a0with friends and family;<\/p>

Penitential liturgies<\/strong>:\u00a0The Light is On For You<\/a>, Wednesdays in Lent in the Metro DC area;\u00a0or call your local parish for Confession opportunities;<\/p>

Pilgrimages:<\/strong>\u00a0a sign of penance,\u00a0places of pilgrimage in the United States<\/a>;<\/p>

Voluntary self-denial:<\/strong>\u00a0fasting and almsgiving;<\/p>

Fraternal sharing:<\/strong>\u00a0charitable and missionary works.<\/p>
