One hundred years ago today—on July 13, 1917—Our Lady of Fatima made her third appearance to Saint Jacinta, Saint Francisco and their cousin Servant of God Lucia as promised.
That day, she also showed the children of Fatima a terrifying vision of Hell and the suffering of souls that go there. But like a good mother, she provided them with instruction and help in their fear. She explained what role she herself would have in the 20th Century and beyond, and taught them how to pray a special prayer at the end of each decade of the Rosary:
She also made the great promise:
“In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.”
Afterall, her triumph is His triumph. For the Immaculate Heart is the response of a creature who alone had a human heart that knew no sin, that loved the Lord completely, and that trusted in the promise of the Redemption. “At last, she is bone of my bone, and flesh of my flesh” in the fullness of true humanity that Christ loved and from whom He took on our human nature. The fulfillment of Christ’s salvific work starts with the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. What she loves is what He loves, and in the end God will be “all in all.”
The centenary of Fatima continues beyond May 13th through each one of the apparitions on the 13th of each month until October 13. Her call to the faithful to pray the Rosary for peace continues today.
August 13th, September 13th, and October 13th all offer us new occasions to draw close to Mary and to pray for the conversion of sinners and the peace of the world.
We end with a beautiful video of the recent celebrations on May 13, 2017 in Aleppo where our fellow Catholics carried the statue of Our Lady of Fatima in procession through the streets with candles, songs, and a brass band for the first time since the 5-year siege ended.
Let us all pray and make sacrifices for peace in our world, abroad and at home.
Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us! Immaculate Heart of Mary, be the salvation of my soul!
