Registration is now open for the classic directed silent retreat, the Spiritual Exercises, held at the Juniorate House of Studies in Washington, DC for women over Presidents’ Day Weekend, Friday, February 12 – Monday, February 15, 2016.  Spiritual Exercises Flyer February 2016

What are the “Spiritual Exercises”?

St. Ignatius of Loyola, 16th century founder of the Jesuits, developed this structured retreat during his own time of intense prayer and contemplation in the cave at Manresa in Spain.  By systematically moving through the mysteries of the faith, the retreatant is invited to experience a personal and very “custom-made” contemplation of these truths as they apply to one’s own life and situation.  Every year during Lent the pope himself has the Spiritual Exercises preached to him and his household as a privileged time of renewal and deeper personal conversion.

What will it be like?

In order to open ourselves to a time of prayer and to cultivate a true attitude of “listening” to God, the retreat is a silent one.  Our sisters and the IVE priest preaching are available for consultation and for assistance, but retreatants are asked to respect each other’s silence (it is also advisable to set this time aside from regular cell phone usage).  The schedule includes daily Mass, conferences, Eucharistic Adoration, and opportunities for confession.  The Juniorate House is blessed to have the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land as its immediate neighbor down the block, allowing retreatants to pray on the grounds of the Monastery and in the beautiful Shrine as well.  Accommodations are shared rooms, so expect to have other women as your roommates.

Our Prayers for You

Since we as religious sisters do the full 30-day Spiritual Exercises once every ten years as well as the week-long exercises annually, it is a great joy to facilitate an occasion for  lay women to do the Spiritual Exercises too so that you also may step into a time of deep prayer and return renewed to your daily lives in the world.
