Throughout the Church, May is celebrated as the “Month of Mary” with Marian processions, May crownings, and a number of liturgical Marian feast days including Our Lady of Fatima (May 13) and Our Lady of Luján (May 8).
Month of Mary: Prayer for Peace
Servant of God Pope Paul VI wrote an encyclical Mense Maio (1965) on the nature, purpose and value of May as the Month of Mary. He subtitled the work “on Prayers during May for Preservation of Peace” with the special call to turn with love and confidence to our Heavenly Mother, the Virgin Mary, in begging for the fruit of the Second Vatican Council and for world peace in a tense period of history.
We too face times of shocking violence, abductions and dangerous instability in many part of the world, especially in Syria, Nigeria and Ukraine. During this month of Mary we can also entrust ourselves and the world once again into the hands of Mary so that she may intercede and bring all to Christ her Son.
Our Lady of Luján
On May 8, Feast of Our Lady of Luján, many of the members of our Religious Family did just that. Not only did we gather to honor and thank her in a Holy Mass presided by His Eminence Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, but also to pronounce consecrations and final vows.
Four IVE seminarians made their perpetual vows during the Holy Mass, a decisive moment of self-gift in consecrated life before their diaconal ordinations at the end of the month. Two sisters from Guyana also renewed their temporal vows.
Also, all the IVE brother novices and SSVM sister novices consecrated themselves to Our Lady according to the method of St. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort. We ask Mary to accompany these novices as they prepare for first vows in the fall, at which time they will renew this Marian consecration under vow according to our fourth vow of Marian consecration.
Prayer to Mary from Paul VI
Let us unite our prayers with the words of Paul VI in number 12 of Mense Maio:
May she who experienced the cares and hardships of earthly life, the weariness of daily toil, the hardships and trials of poverty, and the sorrows of Calvary, come to aid the needs of the Church and the human race.
May she graciously lend an ear to the devout pleas of those all over the world who beg her for peace. May she enlighten the minds of those who rule nations.
And finally, may she prevail on God, who rules the winds and storms, to calm the tempests in men’s warring hearts and grant us peace in our day.
