Third Ordinary General Chapter
The most particular grace of the year was the celebration of the Third Ordinary General Chapter of our Institute in Rome during the month of July. The reach of this event extended to touch all of our sisters and all our missions. Nearly sixty Chapter Mothers came from all over the world bringing with them the experience of the missions and the common desire to seek together God’s will for our community.
Our Province especially felt the effect of the Chapter through the grace of new assignments of missionaries and of mother superiors. In particular we received a new Provincial Superior, Mother Mary of the Sacred Heart Gaes, SSVM and new superiors of the Houses of Formation, Mother Mary of the Immaculate Conception Ambrogio, SSVM in the Juniorate House and Mother Mary of the Incarnate Word Batta, SSVM as Mistress of Novices.
Several long-time members of the Province received new missions in other places of the world: Mother Mary Mother of Mercy McDonnough, SSVM will now serve on the General Council in Rome and Mother Maria de la Caridad Asensio, SSVM has become the first Provincial Superior of the new Province of Northern Europe (Holland, Ireland, Iceland and Lithuania). We congratulate and thank them for their service in this mission land of the United States.
Signs of Growth: New Building Projects
Both our missions in Toronto and Avondale witnessed exciting moments of growth. The long-awaited “Family Centre” was completed and formally opened in April at St. Augustine of Canterbury in Toronto’s North York. Our Founder, Fr. Carlos Miguel Buela, was present for the occasion along with many sisters and priests of the Province. Later on in August, our sisters rejoiced at the blessing and groundbreaking for the new parish of St. Roque at the “Misión Santa Maria” in Avondale, PA. Part of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s special outreach to the Mexican community, the Misión Santa Maria has been a dear mission of our sisters since they first joined the work in 1996.
Congratulations to the Graduates!
Five of our sisters completed their studies this May, graduating with degrees in education, history and engineering sciences. We congratulate Sr. Maria Gema (Hunter College, NY), Sr. Maria Auxiliadora (Hunter College, NY), Sr. Mary Mother of Hope (Hunter College, NY), Sr. Mary of the Incarnate Word (Caldwell College, NJ), and Sr. Maryja Czarna Madonna (University of Michigan, MI).
In Thanksgiving for the Grace of Vocations
This year we were also able to welcome new members into our community as postulants and as new novices, as well as to witness the profession of first vows, and the perpetual profession of sisters New York this September. Every vocation is a singular gift from God, unrepeatable and precious in His eyes. Please join us in praying for an increase and sanctification of vocations, and for the perseverance and needs of those in formation that they may be true spouses of Christ and holy missionaries for the Third Millennium.
Two New Missions Are Added to Our Province
During the last months of 2010 our Province grew to include two new missions: the foundation in Suriname (South America, former Dutch Guyana) and the community in Peterborough, Canada. The mission in Suriname is composed of sisters with various missionary experience—the mother superior has been serving until now in Holland, another sister has been in the mission in the neighboring country of Guyana (English speaking). The December foundation in Canada began with two sisters working alongside the IVE priests in parishes north of Toronto in the Diocese of Peterborough. Two more tabernacles in the world, where Our Lord may be honored and adored!
We give thanks for the many seen and unseen grace bestowed upon our small missionary family in the year 2010. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
