Ecce quam bonum, et quam iucundum habitare fratres in unum. (Behold how good and how pleasant when brothers live as one.) (Psalm 133)

From January 25-28, 2011 our community held its Fourth Provincial Chapter of the Province of the Immaculate Conception. Currently our province includes over ten convents and one monastery in the United States, two convents in Canada, as well as the mission houses in Guyana and Suriname. The Chapter was held in Upper Marlboro, Maryland at the Novitiate House.

Our Provincial Chapters are held every three years and are a source of great grace and blessing. All of the local superiors of our province come together along with elected members and invited sisters for a series of conferences and presentations. This year the Chapter studied the conclusions of the Third Ordinary General Chapter held in summer of 2010, as well as heard reports of the various missions, and looked at ways to live out our charism ever more faithfully in our consecrated life.

It was a particular grace to have in attendance Mother Maria de la Consolata Carballo, SSVM, Provincial in the United States from 1998-2001and currently our Vicar General serving in Rome, as well as Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE, Provincial Superior of the Institute of the Incarnate Word and Spiritual Consultant for the Provincial Chapter.

The closing Mass was held at the historic Sacred Heart Chapel in Bowie (known as White Marsh) where Bishop John Carroll was consecrated Bishop of Balitmore in 1789, the first bishop of the newly formed United States of America. Sisters from the Juniorate and Novitiate joined the Chapter Mothers to give thanks to God for all His many blessings as we seek to “prolong the Incarnation” in this land.

Through the intercession of the Immaculate Conception we pray for the continued fruits of our Provincial Chapter, for many holy vocations, and for the work of the missions here and abroad. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
