The opening Mass for the Popular Mission in St. John the Evangelist Church on the Pomeroon River took place on Sunday, August 8, 2010.  This marked the beginning of an historical event for the community: the first Popular Mission ever to be held there in since the parish was established 108 years ago.  Fr. Jose Signorelli, IVE, who preached the mission sermons, was accompanied by 4 seminarians and 4 sisters from the Religious Family of the Incarnate Word, as well as 3 lay volunteers, all coming from the United States.

The mission included daily house visits on the river, and summer school activities for children and youth.  Each night the faithful participated in the praying of the Holy Rosary and Holy Mass.  During the Mass they listened to the missionary sermon which focused on the most fundamental truths of our faith and salvation.  After the Mass, there were camp fires, songs, and entertaining skits.  Despite unusually high tides and flooding in the area, a great number of people participated in this special event.  The greatest visible fruits were seen in the reception of the sacraments, especially Confession, and the baptism of six children of the community.  On behalf of the Religious Family of the Incarnate Word and the St. John’s community, we would like to thank the Parish Lay Assistant, Nicholas Gonsalves and his family for all of the hard work and sacrifices they endured which made the mission possible.  After the closing of this mission, the missionaries traveled to Moruca for the annual Popular Mission in Santa Rosa.
